Playing Billiards With Light Comments

Dec14

Two weeks ago I photographed Olivia Vivian, an Australian Olympian who has joined the OSU gymnastics team. After photographing her inside on the bars, we went outside for the interview. I was hoping to make some head and shoulders photos that we call mug shots. The problem was I had forgotten that reporter Kevin Hampton uses a recorder during interviews, making it difficult to get a photo without the recorder in the frame. While watching the interview I noticed that the pedestrians on Jefferson Ave. would walk through pools of reflected light. When the interview was over I had Olivia stand in a spot where the background was in shade and she could see the sun reflecting off the window of the building in front of her. Then we had her rotate a bit so she was not squinting. Since I was shooting toward the sun I used my cap to shade the lens. We spent about 10 seconds getting in the proper position and about thirty seconds to get 10-15 frames. Not bad for less than a minutes work. My plan is to refine this technique and add it to the bag of tricks.
